Bulgarian Society for Microbiology  (BSM)

BULGARIAN SOCIETY FOR MICROBIOLOGY (BSF) was found in 1927. Since 1946 it has become a member of Union of Scientists in Bulgaria. BSF unites around 200 microbiologists working in different fields as general and industrial microbiology, medical microbiology, veterinary microbiology, plant microbiology, soil microbiology and virology. Every 4 years the society held national congresses of microbiology since 1965. The last 13th National congress of microbiology was carried out in the town of Tryavna in 2014. The society organizes also the National congresses in Virology. The last, eighth congress was held in 2016. BSF was also a founder of the Balkan Society for Microbiology. BSF is a member of FEMS which provides financial support and specializations to young Bulgarian scientists in leading laboratories worldwide.

THE STEPHAN ANGELOFF INSTITUTE OF MICROBIOLOGY (SAIM-BAS) is a national research centre in microbiological sciences and member of the Institute Pasteur Association. As a headquarters of Bulgarian Microbiological Society and the Balkan Society of Microbiology it is initiator and promoter of various activities for integration and encouraging of microbiologists in the region. Since its foundation the Institute's strategic lines have been developed comprising investigations on problems implicated in public health, ecology and biotechnology, and teaching activities and training of PhD students. Contemporary investigations in rapidly developing and prosperous branches of microbiological science are carried out more than 70 years in the field of general and applied microbiology, infectious microbiology, virology, immunology, bacterial and plant biotechnologies. The researchers' activities are widely based on national and international scientific cooperation, including joint research projects.
