2009 ANNUAL PAPERS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF MASS COMMUNICATIONS AT THE NEW BULGARIAN UNIVERSITY

 

The Annual book of the Department of Mass Communications 2009 is the 13th edition since 1996 and the 4th electronic edition on CD. Each year, since 1996, the Department of Mass Communications publishes its Annual Book. The present edition is a collection of papers elaborated in 2009 – the year that the treaty of Lisbon came into force  and the Internet turned 40 years.

The first section of the Annual Book 2009 includes theoretical and practical research presented by the Department of Mass Communications faculty members and lecturers: Prof. Vladimir Mihaylov, D.Sc., founder of the department, presents his answer to the question “The Historical Development of the Mass-media – the End or a Pause?”; Prof. Tolya Stoitsova, D.Sc., together with Iliana Alexandrova and Diana Popski present “Journalists and bloggers about PR in Bulgaria” – research, conducted among 208 journalists and 52 bloggers from Bulgaria; the topic, chosen by Assoc. Prof. Mihail Meltev, PhD, head of the Department of Mass Communications is very important for the visual media “Expressions of the Camera”; the journalist Assoc. Prof. Alexander Angelov, PhD, offers his point of view to the topic “How to teach the journalists at the end of the first decade of the 21st century and what to teach them?”; Assoc. Prof. Russi Marinov, PhD, focuses on the modern information practices by presenting the topic “Strategic communication – interactive models”; Assoc. Prof. Nevyana Krusteva, PhD presents “Communication Aspects of Effective Teaching”. Senior Assoc. Prof. Dessislava Boshnakova, PhD, discussed “Social media in the Instrumentarium of the Contemporary Communicators”; Assoc. Prof. Stoyko Petkov, PhD presents the development of “Interactive, personalized and social TV”; a specific  issue in culture development is proposed by Assoc. Prof. Rosen Stoyanov, PhD – “Culture in the Context of the Civilization of the Images”. One of our lecturers – Boril Mechkov, has devoted his article on “Movie productions in BNT: values and administrative approach”; law professor at the Department – Dr. Raina Nikolova proposed article, on “Legal nature and regulation in media activities”. Todor Panayotov – “Ivan Evstatiev Geshov – statesman, journalist, publisher”; Dr. Plamen Pavlov underlines the importance of the new development of Internet in his article “Twittering the censureship in 140 characters ”, while Dr. Alexander Christov reviews the “Emancipation of PR to the media and its necessity to happen”.

The second section of the Annual Papers includes articles written by the Department of Mass Communications PhD students: Evelina Christova, presents her research on “Regulation of the internal organizational communications in the context of the EU”, Ralitsa Filipova, suggests a material on media history “Organizational and Professional Models. Organizational models – of the free market, the public responsibility, authoritarian model”. Hristo Bonev presents “Economical prepositions for the Digitalisation of the Film Industry”. Elena Coneva discuses “Internet as book for complaints and appreciation”

In the third part The Annual Book presents the 125 pages Habilitation Work of Assoc. Prof. Dessislava Boshnakova, PhD “Political communication Web 2.0” – the book consisting of three main parts – Theory and Web 2.0; new ways to communicate with the electorate; and  Politicians and online users in Bulgaria;

In the fourth part there are included important issues, discussed by the students during the annual Spring and the Autumn Conferences of the Department of Mass Communications. The Spring Conference, “The New Media and PR User” took place on 28-29 of May 2009. The Autumn Conference - “Journalism without Journalists; PR without PR specialists” took place on 13-15 November 2009 in the NBU Library Hall.

The fifth part is devoted to information about the annual PR Summer School – 2009. The PR Summer School, a traditional forum of the Department of Mass Communications, is held each year since 1998 and is trying to bring together PR professionals from all over the country.  The 11th PR Summer School - "Colourful PR" took place on 13-15 July 2009. Many practitioners in the field of PR, advertising, public communications, media experts, journalists and students and academic professionals from New Bulgarian University, Sofia University “St. Climent Ohridski”, SWU “Neofit Rilski” participated in the 2009 PR Summer School. For the first time, students from a different continent presented their topics in a specially developed skype session – some of them presenting in real time from the USA.

The sixth part presents a selection of student works prepared for the course The Art and the Media Space with lecturer Vesela Hristova-Radoeva. Those are Desislava Angelova – The collection. A portrait of Hugo Voeten; Yoan Vasilev – The stories of Nedko Solakov; Luba Manoilova – Why people watch Picasso? and Natalia Takova – To materialize life.

The seventh part of the Annual Book is again connected to a tradition in the Department of Mass Communication: It presents Alumni with their names and portraits – young and beautiful, themes of the Diploma thesis and short CV information of the students who were successful and have graduated BA, MA, and PhD degrees.

There are furthermore short presentations of two books, published in 2009 by the Department of Mass Communications members – “Proverbs: The principles of PR – preserved and immortalized by the Bulgarian proverbs and sayings” by Ass. Prof. Dessislava Boshnakova, PhD; “Conflict discourse, mass media and politics” by Ass. Prof. Rosen Stoyanov, PhD.

In its last part, the Annual Book presents the International activities. The NBU with its Department of Mass Communications is one of the six universities across Europe, all specializing in communication and public relations in international professional contexts, that have joined forces as co-founders, to create a unique joint program offering the full benefits of their collective expertise and international networks - the Master in International Communication Program.  In June 2009 Assoc. Prof. Russi Marinov, PhD held a presentation "The interactive technology in crisis communications"at the Ecrea Workshop, Strategic and organizational communication in companies.
