Summary
The present “Annual Book 2014” of the Department of Mass Communications at the New Bulgarian University (NBU) is the 19th edition in succession and the 9th modern e-edition for that scientific publishing.
And we cannot refrain from marking a jubilee – the 60th anniversary of Prof. Mihail Meltev, PhD.
In the first section of the Annual Book 2014 studies by actual lecturers of the Department of Mass Communications in NBU are included.
Prof. Vladimir Mihaylov, D.Sc., in “Culture for Free” dwells on his reasoning about the global challenges, which can upraise, but also could stop the development of the individual’s spirituality in the times of liberal democracy, the fourth industrial revolution and a new access to the images. Prof. Tolya Stoitsova, D.Sc., in “Hezbollah in the Mirror of the Bulgarian Press at the Background of the Conflict in Syria: One Year Later” puts the accent on the interpretation of the results of a research of the media reflection of Hezbollah’s activities“. In "Mobile Internet Comunications" Prof. Roussi Marinov, PhD discusses and explores the trends in the development of the mobile internet technologies in the coming several years and how the mobile communications will impose changes and bring about transformations in the media realities. In "The Visual Communication" Prof. Mihail Meltev, PhD analyzes the main elements of the visual composition as balancing, dominant features and rhythm elements, and their application in audio-vision for directing the attention, placing accents, and attaining emotional influences. In "Theatre of the Others: In the Actor" Assoc. Prof. Petia Alexandrova, PhD places the accent on the visiting foreign spectacles at the theatre festival “Varna Summer 2014” – they use classics as a fundamental construction, but rely on the actor’s energy to achieve strong impact. "Organising Crowd Events” by Assoc. Prof. Dessislava Boshnakova, PhD contains a review of the phenomena of the 21st century, namely crowdsoursing – assigning work to the crowd, and crowdfunding – financing the crowd. In “Similarities in “Fatherland front” and “Front” TV Shows” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Raina Nikolova, PhD the author follows on the multiple similarities between these two, while in reality the quoted transmissions of the different TV stations represent an example of breach of loyal competition. " Political Branding" by Assoc. Prof. Rossen Stoyanov, PhD entertains the theme of specific “decorating” of political elements as a game: from the initial remembering, through the direct impulsive recognition, towards fancying, sharing and identification. In "Organisational Culture and Communications" Assistant Prof. Evelina Christova, PhD focuses on processing information about organizational culture and communications and initiates the first steps towards research on charity communication. "Boris Vazov in the Development of the Bulgarian Journalism During the First Half of the 20th Century " of Assistant Prof. Todor Panayotov, PhD traces and evaluates the journalistic work of the lawyer, politician, parliament member and diplomat, who in the course of four decades collaborates and is editor of the most prestigious printed media in the country. "Youtube Multi-Channel Networks" of Assistant Prof. Stoyko Petkov, PhD summarizes and analyses the latest developments in the relationship between Youtube and the video creators.. "Freedom of Speech in the Social Networks" by Juliana Kancheva, PhD reviews the significant changes taking place in the ways and forms of communication in digital environment, the factors and problems linked to these processes. " The Interview – Form of Communication" by Ralitza Philipova, PhD discloses the must-be norms in creating a real interview as norms of socializing. In "The Conflict between the Government and the Protesting Citizen in the Focus of the Screen Arts" Boril Meckov formulates his theses that the screen arts offer a non-traditional but promising approach in studying the conflicting relations between citizens and the exercising of power in abuse of the public interest.
The second section presents articles by PhD students. In "Image and National Branding" Boryana Gosheva argues that it will be sufficient for our country to engage in one problem, which is exciting to many people, and to be actively involved in solving it. In "Online Environment - 10,5 on the Richter Scale for Social Change“ Dessislava Dankova places the participating parties in an equal position – of sharing, of listening, of hearing, of attention and loyalty. Many communities are being created, which assemble on the basis of interests and discuss subjects, which they are interested in and they transform into relatively autonomous both form economic interests and from the pressure from the state. In "Tendencies in the Media Campaigns of the Political Parties which participated in the 41st National Assembly Elections" Zlatina Ivanova narrates about the parliamentary elections in 2009 and the “phenomena of the messiah”, the main factor and catalyst for which were the native media channels. "Tracking Down of Essencial Moments in the History of Radio" by Kalin Kalchev narrates how this genious discovery came about.
The third section of the Annual Book represents an inter-departmental ("Political Sciences" and "Mass Communications") research project by lecturers and students on the theme "Media Portrait of the Armed Groups in Syria”, headed by Prof. Tolya Stoitsova, Ph.D., D.Sc. and by Assoc. Prof. Mira Mayer, Ph.D. The article on the theme “Media Portrait of the Armed Grouping Front Al Nusra in Syria“ is by Daniela Petrova, a student in “German Sciences” (“Germanistics”) with a minor “Politology”. The presentations are by Elena Veleva, Mass Communications Department, pre-diploma student, with a theme “Syria’s National Coalition Al-Quaeda”; by Petya Genova-Tzvetanova, English studies ("Anglistics"), with a minor "Political sciences” on the sub-theme “Islamic front“ (presentation in English); by Nony Dyulgerova, “Political sciences” Department, on the theme “Free Syrian Army”.
The fourth section presents the accents from the Spring and the Autumn Conferences of 2014, managed by the Department of Mass Communications, namely the first topics being "Do We Really Know the Contemporary Users of Journalism and PR " and “ Ethics and Money in Journalism and PR”.
The fifth section is allotted to the XVI Summer School of Public Relations, which during the year under review, was dedicated to the subject “Communication and Culture”.
The sixth section "Gallery” includes creative works of the Mass Communications Department team: 55 photos by Dessislava Boshnakova and Happy@NBU.
The students’ photoreports from course “Audio-Visual Creativity“ are on the theme “Youth”, the project containing annotation, synopsis and photos. Works by Victoria Genceva, Cindy Vaskova and Lilly Mazurova are presented.
